Twelve people are confirmed to have died while another 14 were rescued after a waste mass at the Kampala Capital City Authority Landfill in Kiteezi collapsed on Saturday morning.

The bodies and the survivors were found during rescue efforts involving the police, the Uganda Red Cross, the Ministry of Works and Transport, and the Office of the Prime Minister, among others.

The garbage mass hit several homes, burying people and animals.

Last night’s torrential rains triggered a catastrophic collapse of the garbage dump.

State Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Lillian Aber was among the top government officials seen at the site.

KCCA in a statement said 14 people have so far been successfully rescued and evacuated to Mulago and St. Steven hospitals.

“Our teams, along with other government agencies are on ground taking the necessary measures to ensure the area is secure and to prevent any further incidents,” they said.

“The rescue operation is still ongoing and we shall share updates as they come in,” they added.
