Uganda has released 13 more Rwanda nationals and dropped criminal charges against them.
The group, which include three women, had been facing trial in the General Court Martial and the civil court on charges of human trafficking, Illegal possession of firearms among others.
The 13 were paraded before the media in Kampala on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, by the Minister Sam Kahamba Kuteesa and other Foreign Affairs Ministry officials.
Mr Kuteesa told journalists that some of the Rwandans had been repatriated but later came back to Uganda and engaged in criminal activities, leading to their re-arrest.
Those released include the wife of Rene Rutagungira, a retired senior member of the Rwandan army who was released earlier this month
“Those who were released today faced a number of charges related to security and some had been arrested in possession of firearms,” Kuteesa said as he handed them to the representative of the Rwanda High Commission to Uganda, Noel Mucyo.
Mr Kuteesa revealed that currently, no other Rwandan is being detained by Uganda, adding that since the Luanda agreement, two Ugandans have been released by Rwandan authorities.
The development comes days ahead of the meeting between President Museveni and Paul Kagame which is scheduled for this Friday at the Katuna border in Kabale.
