A total number of 37 people perished in 76 Easter holiday road crashes recorded country wide.
While addressing the media on the Easter holiday Traffic updates at Police headquarters Naguru, the Traffic Police Spokesperson ASP Faridah Nampiima said out of the 76 crashes, 28 were fatal, 40 were serious and 8 were minor.
113 people were victims of the 76 road crashes of which 76 sustained serious injuries and 37 were reported dead.
According to Nampiima, one driver died and 8 injured in the crashes, 10 motorcycle users died and 20 injured, 3 passengers died and 15 injured, 2 died from taxis and 4 injured, 8 died from private vehicles while 12 pedestrians died and 8 sustained injuries.
However, no deaths and injuries were recorded in coasters and buses during the Easter holiday.
One of the fatal accident recorded was along Masaka- Mbarara road at Kyooko in Kinoni Town council involving a Toyota Alphard registration number UBL 314C Toyota Alphard, that was traveling from Kampala side heading to Mbarara and motor vehicle reg. no SSD 327S/SSD 137Q that was from Mbarara. The two motor vehicles had a head on collision and 9 people died on spot.
ASP Nampiima said the major accidents are always caused by over speeding which also contributed to the highest number of crashes on roads during the Easter period. A total of 29 crashes were caused by over speeding and 11 of these were fatal, 14 were serious and four were minor.
14 crashes were registered because of careless over taking. Other causes of accidents according to the Traffic report were unknown cause, sudden turning, following too close, neglecting right of way, sudden entrance, brake failure, careless pedestrian, obstacles on carriage ways and driving under influence of alcohol.
