A traffic police report has it that 74 lives were lost in 437 accidents across the country in the past week.

According to the report, 224 road users received serious injuries, while 124 received minor injuries.

Traffic spokesman Michael Kananura confirmed the figures.

He expressed his concerns regarding the “troubling statistics.”

“The cause of the rising number of road accidents and fatalities remains speeding, improper overtaking, and drifting from one lane to another,” he told the media Monday.

Kananura emphasized the importance of responsible driving.

He also highlighted the need for continuous training for both drivers and pedestrians to enhance road safety knowledge and practices.

According to Kananura, the Directorate of Traffic Police has carried out operations in various parts of the country, targeting all vehicles that are in dangerous mechanical conditions.

“For the month of August, we have deregistered and issued EPS tickets to a total of 1,127 vehicles across the country,” stated Kananura.

Kananura adds that the 1,127 vehicles were tasked with being repaired and taken back to the inspector of motor vehicles for re-inspection.

He urged the public, transportation authorities, and relevant stakeholders to work together to find effective solutions to minimize road accidents and casualties.
