Over 200 residents were left homeless on Tuesday morning after heavy rains characterized by strong winds destroyed over 40 homes in Kyesiiga sub-county, Masaka District.

House roofs were blown off by the strong winds and several acres of banana, coffee, maize, cassava plantations were put down.

At least 10 villages in Bbuliro and Kitunda Parishes of Kyesiiga Sub County in Bukoto central constituency were affected. These include BBuliro, Gayaza, Ddimu landing site, Katikamu, Miwololo, Malembo landing site, Mweruka, Mikunyu, Bigga, Lukono among others

Mr. Gordon Ssebuggwawo, the Kyesiiga sub county Chairperson said many of his residents are stranded with no shelter and food, and urged the government of Uganda through the Office of the Prime Minister to rescue the affected households

Hon. Richard Sebamala, the Bukoto Central Member of Parliament said he already talked to the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness under the office of the Prime Minister and other relief agencies like Uganda Red cross to provide emergency help to the residents.

The Office of the Prime Minister and Uganda Red cross in October 2021 delivered relief items to this area following the heavy hailstorm that hit the same sub county in September 2021

Kyesiiga Sub County has always been affected by strong winds blowing from Lake Victoria since most of the forests along the lake shores were destroyed by timber harvesting companies and charcoal burners which left the area so open with no wind traps.
