The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Among, has directed government security agencies to expeditiously investigate and reprimand those behind the gruesome attack on Mpondwe -Lhubiriha Secondary School in Kasese District on Friday night.
The Speaker of Parliament therefore directed the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to present to Parliament a statement detailing circumstances that led to the murder of over 40 students by suspected ADF assailants.
The Speaker agreed with Kira Municipality Member of Parliament Hon Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda who refused the report which was about to be tabled by the Minister of State for Higher Education Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo about the situation in Kasese.
“We want to condemn this loss in the strongest terms and such acts should be investigated and the perpetrators should be brought to book,” Speaker Among directed during plenary on Tuesday.
The attack, blamed on suspected Allied Defence Forces (ADF) rebels, left at least 42 people, including five students.
Speaker Among’s directive is also in line with government’s pledge to trace and capture those behind the attack.
Following the attack, President Museveni ordered deployment of more troops on the DRC-Uganda border.
Meanwhile the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Among has informed the Members of Parliament that they will now start using the biometric register that captures their attendance and that of Ministers.
While addressing Parliament today Hon Among said that the move is aimed at monitoring the attendance of legislators in the 11th Parliament because most of them have been ascending from duty.
Rt Hon Among told the Members of Parliament as it resumes its work after a one month recess that they shall start publishing the attendance register as part of our accountability.
The Speaker of Parliament has always lashed out at Members of Parliament for their continued absence from Committee sessions and Plenary proceedings and said that she will start issuing warning letters to MPs who continuously dodge Committee sessions and Plenary proceedings.
She said that she already has a list of Members of Parliament who attend committee sessions and those who attend Plenary proceedings who will be appreciated at some stage.
