USSSA Ball Games II 2023 Officially Opened: Celebrating Sports Excellence

Kabale Municipal Stadium, Uganda – The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ball Games II was officially launched on the afternoon of July 12th, 2023, amidst a highly attended event. Reverend Duncans Mugumya, the Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports from the Ministry of Education and Sports, graced the occasion as the esteemed Chief Guest.

The festivities commenced with a vibrant procession led by the brass band and security, with participants marching from St Mary’s College Rushoroza through Kabale Town to the venue. The enthusiasm and energy were palpable as the young athletes paraded their dedication to sportsmanship.

Ball Games II, an integral part of the Ministry of Education and Sports calendar, focuses on sports not covered during Ball Games I and Fresh Diary Games, held in the first term. This championship, held during the second term, includes an extensive array of games such as Basketball 3X3, Football Under 14 and 16 for girls and boys, Netball, Volleyball, Beach Soccer, Beach Volleyball, Rugby 7s, Woodball, Handball, Lacrosse, Athletics, and Dance Sport.

“This edition of the USSSA Ball Games II marks a significant milestone as we introduce several new games, including Beach Volleyball and Beach Soccer, which provide an opportunity for students to explore different sports,” Reverend Mugumya stated, highlighting the progressive nature of the championship.

With over 8,000 students, both boys and girls, alongside officials present in Kabale for the highly anticipated games, the atmosphere is electric. The competition began on Sunday, July 9th, and will continue until Tuesday, July 18th, 2023.

Addressing the gathered crowd at Kabale Municipal Stadium, Mr. Monday Christopher, the Headmaster of St. Mary’s Rushoroza, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the association for selecting their school as the host for this year’s competitions. “We are grateful as St. Mary’s Rushoroza to have been chosen out of all the districts in the western side. We don’t take it for granted,” Mr. Christopher humbly acknowledged, emphasizing the honor bestowed upon their institution.

Taking the opportunity to advocate for support from the government, Mr. Christopher added, “We call upon the government to support schools, especially in terms of facilities. This support will not only help us host such events but also aid in identifying and promoting new talents.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association, Mr. Christopher Mugisha Banage, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all the schools that participate in USSSA activities, acknowledging their unwavering commitment.

“We are deeply grateful to the schools that participate in all USSSA activities, no matter how challenging it may be. Your dedication is crucial in our quest to become the number one school sports federation in Africa,” Mr. Banage remarked, recognizing the collective effort required to achieve their ambitious vision.

Hajj Twahil Kiteezaala, the acting President of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association, highlighted their focus on training young officials. “Our vision is to train young officials and develop their skills. Currently, we train student referees, assistant coaches, and media officers who we hope to utilize in our future games. Furthermore, we have displayed outstanding performance, winning 18 out of the 24 East African trophies at the FEASSSA Games in Tanzania last year,” Hajj Twahil Kiteezaala proudly stated.

“The Association of Secondary Schools Headteachers of Uganda (ASSHU) is delighted to witness the official opening of the USSSA Ball Games II. This championship provides a remarkable platform for our students to showcase their talents and passion for sports. We commend the efforts of USSSA in promoting and nurturing sports excellence among our youth,” stated Oluk the representative of ASSHU, highlighting the association’s support and enthusiasm for the event.

Reverend Duncan’s Mugumya, representing Honorable Peter Ogwang, praised the USSSA for their successful events and expressed the government’s commitment to supporting sports, particularly in schools. “We are very proud to witness the successful organization of USSSA events. The government is ready to continue supporting sports, and we are also planning to develop primary school sports,” Reverend Mugumya assured, highlighting the government’s dedication to nurturing young talents.
