According to Vatican news , Uganda’s Prime Minister, Ms. Robinah Nabbanja, had a meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, lasting approximately 25 minutes.
During the conversation, they discussed various topics, and Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, confirmed that the Pope was deeply moved by the generous welcome extended by Ugandan institutions to migrants and refugees.
This welcome encompasses not only those from the African region but also individuals from Central Asian countries.
According to the UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR, Uganda is currently hosting around 1.5 million refugees and asylum seekers, with many originating from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burundi.
As part of the customary gift exchange, Pope Francis presented a bronze statue to Uganda’s prime minister, symbolizing a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak.
The statue carries the inscription: “Be messengers of peace.” Additionally, the Pope offered Ms. Nabbanja copies of significant papal documents, including his message for this year’s World Day of Peace, the Document on Human Fraternity, and a book on the Statio Orbis on March 27, 2020, published by the Vatican’s Publishing House.
