First lady Janat Kataha Museveni has today, Tuesday 24th October 2023 opened the new girl’s dormitory Salaama School for the blind.
The 36-bed facility constructed by MTN Uganda will accommodate up to 72 learners, well equipped with safety equipment, furniture, washrooms and caretaker living quarter.
MTN partnered government was after the school’s old one caught fire last year.
It is now one year ever since the girl’s dormitory at Salaama School for the blind gutted fire in Luga village Ntenjeru Kisoga town council in Mukono district and 12 girls lost their lives.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony of Salama School for the Blind’s new dormitory and computer lab today, First Lady and Hon. Minister of Education and Sports –
Janet Museveni, applauded MTN for the support saying it will go a long way in transforming education for the visually impaired children.
“This development comes nearly 11 months since MTN Uganda pledged to construct a dormitory at the Salama School for the visually impaired in December last year following a request by the First Lady and the Hon. Minister for Education and Sports. “Janet Museveni said.

The school head teacher Dorothy Sebadduka said that the school needs more support especially with the construction of the fence around it and as well getting well trained security guards to help them safe guard the school and avoid any further access by the enemies who would wish to attack the school again.
Dorothy added that they have decided to dedicate this day for the memorial service for the 12 girls who died in the fire and as well launch the new dormitory which has been constructed by MTN Uganda.
It should be remembered that at the night of 24th October 2022, fire which source is still unknown, caught the girls for over 25 girls, 12 died and others survived. At this time, well-wishers are contributing towards the reconstruction of the new dormitory and installing of cameras at this school for security purposes, MTN being among the well-wishers.
