The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has expressed his admiration for the Kingdom of Buganda’s substantial contributions to the welfare of Ugandans and the progress of the nation. SG Todwong conveyed his appreciation during a courtesy visit to the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, at his office in Bulange, Mengo, on Wednesday.
“As members of the NRM, we are deeply thankful for your deliberate endeavors to enhance the lives of ordinary citizens through projects in agriculture, such as coffee cultivation, education, and healthcare,” Todwong stated while addressing the media following the meeting.
He also praised the Kabaka for unifying all residents of the Kingdom, regardless of their political affiliations, saying, “I am touched by your inclusive approach in welcoming and uniting our people from all political backgrounds and faiths.”
Todwong emphasized, “We are here in the public eye to serve the best interests of the country. Therefore, it is crucial for cultural institutions and the government to collaborate for the betterment of ordinary citizens.”
He also conveyed greetings from the NRM Chairman, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, as well as the party’s leadership and that of the Acholi Paramount Chief, Rwot David Onen Acana II.
Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, who warmly welcomed SG Todwong, pledged his full support in working together with the government to implement policies that address the needs of those still living in poverty.
“The NRM is, of course, the ruling party, and the government executes the party’s programs. There are specific program aspects that pique our interest, such as youth empowerment through skills development, as everyone must have skills to thrive,” Katikkiro Mayiga said.
He continued, “I am confident that if the government learns about the programs we have in the Kingdom, they will collaborate with us to enhance initiatives that elevate the well-being of our people.”
The Katikkiro stressed the Kingdom’s commitment to improving the health of all citizens and expressed eagerness to cooperate with the government in the field of healthcare. “We collaborate with the government on HIV prevention, with the Kabaka serving as the UNAIDS goodwill Ambassador to combat the spread of HIV and aim to eliminate it by 2030.”
Owek. Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, the Kingdom’s Minister of Information, and Owek. David Ntege, who serves as the Clerk of the Buganda Lukiiko, were also in attendance.
