The Katikkiro of Buganda Owek Charles Peter Mayiga has appealed to government to respect media freedom as it is one of the ways to give journalists space to execute their duties and serve the country through disseminating information effectively.
The Katikkiro noted this as he was the chief guest at the end of year party for journalists who report Buganda Kingdom stories, the function which took place in Bulange Mengo.
The Katikkiro commended journalists for serving the kingdom whole heartedly through reporting, writing, editing and producing stories. “I not only like you but l also respect and value your work. He emphasised.
Owek Mayiga appreciated the fact that this year, few cases of journalists torture have been witnessed and called upon government to try hard to respect media freedom so that they are given space to fulfill their duties.
Additionally, the Katikkiro revealed that the Kingdom has more plans to develop the kingdom through different sources to add on what has been used such as through Ssuubiryo Nkobazambogo Sacco, Oluwalo, Amakula, Blood donation among others to see the activities move smoothly.
The Kingdom spokesperson Owek Israel Kazibwe Kitooke commended Buganda press team for reporting good Buganda stories and appreciated the fact that the relationship between Buganda security team and journalists is strengthening which was a challenge especially during Buganda’s big functions.
He challenged the youth not to look and depend on the less payment that they earn from their media houses but to be creative through engaging in different ventures to help them earn some money. He sited ventures such as farming, agriculture, poultry keeping among others.
The Chairperson for Buganda press team Annet Nalubwama appreciated the journalists for the work well done throughout the year and as well commended the current Kingdom spokesperson for the good relationship with journalists and also appreciated the former kingdom spokesperson for setting a good working environment for journalists in Buganda.
This function was attended by all journalists who report Buganda kingdom stories from different media houses around the country and they have been appreciated with Hampers.
