The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) has passed out 555 officers who successfully completed three months of operational training. The passing out ceremony, held at the UPDF third division headquarters in Moroto, was presided over by Major General Francis Takirwa, the Deputy Commander of Land Forces.

The newly trained officers underwent a three months’ intensive programme covering various aspects of counterinsurgency operations to combat armed cattle rustling in Karamoja

“The trainees underwent rigorous training, equipping them with the necessary skills such as platoon battle drills, range exercises, fighting patrols, tracking, ambushes, and cordon and search operations aimed at removing illegal guns from Karamojong Manyatta homesteads,” Major Richard Ariko said.

Major General Francis Takirwa emphasized the importance of discipline among the forces and stressed the need for respect for civilians during operations.

“Discipline and resilience are crucial in restoring peace to Karamoja. Our forces must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect for the communities they serve,” Takirwa told the officers.

He further outlined the primary goal of the training—to bring an end to cattle rustling in Karamoja, a region plagued by decades of violent cattle theft.

“Our mission is to eradicate cattle rustling, which has caused immense suffering in Karamoja. Through strategic and disciplined operations, we aim to restore peace and security to the region.”

Brigadier General Felix Busizoori highlighted the broader impact of the training on the region:

“The training is not just about combating cattle rustling; it’s about fostering a sense of patriotism and instilling values that will positively influence the entire region,” Busizoori said.

Major General Don Nabasa, the UPDF 3rd Division Commander, attributed the decline in gun violence and cattle rustling witnessed in 2023 to changes in operational strategies, emphasizing the effectiveness of a comprehensive and well-executed training program.
