Former Minister Dr. Kiddu Makubuya dies at 73

Dr. Kiddu Makubuya, a seasoned politician, renowned legal expert, and former Attorney General of Uganda, has passed away at the age of 73 after a long battle with illness.

Dr. Makubuya, who was born in 1949 in Luweero District, served in various capacities in President Museveni’s government, including Minister of State in charge of Luwero Triangle, State Minister for Foreign Affairs (International Cooperation), Minister of Education and Sports, Justice Minister, Attorney General, and Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister. He resigned from the cabinet on February 16, 2012.

During his tenure as Attorney General, Dr. Makubuya played a crucial role in shaping Uganda’s legal framework and was instrumental in the drafting of several key pieces of legislation, including the 1995 Constitution. He was also a member of Parliament for Katikamu South Constituency and served on various parliamentary committees.

Dr. Makubuya was a respected intellectual and scholar, holding a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University and a Master of Laws degree from the University of London. He was also a fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences.

Despite his many achievements, Dr. Makubuya was a frustrated man in his final days, according to close friends. They described him as a patriot who had grown disillusioned with the country’s political direction.

Dr. Makubuya’s legacy in Uganda’s political and legal landscape will be deeply remembered. His contributions to the development of the country’s legal framework and his commitment to public service will be greatly missed.
