The FDC is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of eight lives, including two children, in the Kiteezi landfill collapse in Kampala, Uganda. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims.

We are concerned that the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the government failed to address the issue of the landfill reaching full capacity in 2015, putting the lives of nearby residents at risk.

This incident is a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting public safety and environmental concerns. We urge the government to provide immediate humanitarian support to the affected individuals, including; Provision of shelter and food, Psycho-social support, Relocation and resettlement of those living near the landfill.

We call for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As FDC we recommend the following to be undertaken by both KCCA and Government for sustainable Waste Management in Kampala;

1. Immediate Closure of Kiteezi Landfill Close the Kiteezi landfill to prevent further risks to human life and the environment.

2. Implementation of Solid Waste Management Plan.

3. Engage in a comprehensive solid waste management plan that prioritizes recycling, composting, and proper disposal of waste and Utilization of Acquired Facility in Mukono.

4. Open and utilize the acquired facility in Mukono for solid waste management, ensuring a safe and sustainable solution for Kampala’s waste. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and communities during this difficult time.

May the souls of the departed, rest in eternal peace.
