President Yoeri Kaguta Museveni has hosted the Indian community Uganda for a dinner celebrate Dawali at State House Entebbe.
Speaking to the congregation, Mr. Museveni thanked Indian community for immense contribution towards rebuilding our country Uganda. We had political problems but when we settled and came peaceful many of you helped us to rebuild the country.
“First Lady Janet and I hosted the Indian community in Uganda to Diwali dinner at State House, Entebbe.
I commended the Indian Community for the enormous contribution towards Uganda’s economic development both before independence and after the NRM/A protracted armed people’s struggle.
We made it clear then that the presence of the Indian community in Uganda had to be recognised for the positive role they had been playing in the development of the country. In 1995 we deliberately decided to return all properties that were confiscated by previous regimes.
Now there is complementarity of the two communities (Indian & Ugandan) in trade and other spheres, which is a good thing.
Regarding incidents of criminality, some of which target the business community, they have been minimized and we shall eventually defeat insecurity. I wish you happy celebrations, “Museveni said.
Indians were among other white communities that followed the victims of 1971 presidential which saw them losing their wealthy when Iddi Amin ordered the to leave the country with a few weeks time.
