Anti-corruption agencies are set to recognize and award Uganda’s best and incorruptible public servants who have served their country with integrity.
Action Aid Country Director Xavier Ejoyi says the Integrity Awards will be presented on December 4, 2019, and that the process to identify the best public servants is already ongoing.
“In addition to the anti-corruption caravan, we are having an integrity award that will take place on December 04 to recognize Ugandans who have diligently served this country with integrity. The process to identify these Ugandans is ongoing and we call upon citizens in helping to identify them,” Ejoyi said during flagging off of the 6th Anti-Corruption Caravan at Action Aid Head office in Kansanga.
The Anti-Corruption Caravan is organized by Action Aid Uganda in partnership with the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity, Transparency International and Anti-Corruption Coalition of Uganda and funded by the Democratic Governance Facility (DGF).
This year’s trip will cover 17 districts in 11 days starting today, November 18, 2019, starting with Kampala, to Luweero, Masindi, Kiryandongo, Pakwach, Nebbi, Zombo, Arua, Yumbe, Koboko, Moyo, Adjumani, Amuru, Gulu, Kitgum, Pader, Lira and back to Kampala.
“We shall move from village to village to raise awareness about corruption among ordinary citizens and relating to issues of election bribery. We shall also focus on mobilizing citizens’ collective efforts against corruption using public understanding about dangers of corruption to service delivery, the welfare of citizens and democratic governance,” Ejoyi added.
The anti-corruption agencies urged the government to dedicate more resources to curb corruption in its institutions and also expedite the enactment of the Witness protection law, to support the successful prosecution of corruption cases in Uganda.
“We also call upon all Ugandans to speak out against corruption in households and communities. They should isolate people who abuse public resources. Don’t invite them to your funerals, weddings or fundraising because that can also contribute to corruption,” he said.
Alex Okello, the permanent Secretary Ministry of Ethics and Integrity commended the Anti-corruption agencies for their efforts towards a corruption-free country.
