The Uganda Girls’ national football team will be hoping to tighten their grip on top spot at the 2019 CECAFA U17 Girls cup when they take on Eritrea at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru on Friday afternoon.
Ayub Khalifa’s side climbed on top of the log on Wednesday following an 11-0 humiliation of Djibouti.
The victory on Wednesday was their second in the competition having beaten Burundi 4-0 in their opening game on Monday.
Currently, they sit two points ahead of the chasing pack and a win over Eritrea will ensure they head into the final two games of the championships as favourites to win it.
Despite sitting top, Khalifa is asking for more from his team and claims they have no time to relax.
“We are now top and that was one of our targets from the word go, Khalifa noted.
“The other title contenders Kenya and Tanzania dropped points last time out and that should work as motivation for us going into the next game.
“We have so far scored 15 goals but we can do better as this championship may-in the end-go down to goals.
“Our target will be three more points and score as many goals against Eritrea on Friday.”
Khalifa is blessed with a good crop of players that almost assure his side will score goals in any game they step foot in.
The combination of Fauzia Najjemba and captain Juliet Nalukenge will once again provide the most realistic source for the goals required on Friday.
The two have combined for 9 of Uganda’s 15 goals scored so far in the competition with Nalukenge netting five while Najjemba has helped herself to three.
In the victory over Djibouti, Uganda had six different scorers, proving that goals can come from different sources on a given day.
The other player that will be integral to the set-up will be Samalie Nakachwa who has netted in Uganda’s two games so far. She scored the fourth against Burundi and also got her name onto the scoresheet in the victory over Djibouti.
With all that said, Uganda will need not to get complacent in the game as they come up against an Eritrea side capable of causing an upset.
Having lost their opening game to Tanzania, Eritrea stunned revealers when they held Kenya to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.
That result proved they are capable of the extraordinary and Uganda needs to be on their guard to avoid a similar scenario that befell Kenya.
The other games on Friday will see Kenya taking on Tanzania while Burundi and Djibouti also do battle.
