The ancient board game Omweso, deeply embedded in the traditions of the Buganda Kingdom, is set for a resurgence under the leadership of Ssalongo Robert Sserwanga, the Kingdom’s Minister for Youth, Sports, and Arts.

Today, Monday June 17, 2024, Minister Sserwanga launched the first ever Masaza Mweso Championship, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the game.

The championship aims to rekindle interest in Omweso, a game that has long been a part of the Buganda cultural heritage. This first edition of the championship will kick off at the sub-county level, with competitions running from July 14 to July 28.

The top performers from these initial rounds will be selected to form the Masaza teams, representing their respective sub-counties.

The championship will culminate in a Grand Finale at the Masaza (County) level on November 16, 2024, bringing together the best players from across the sub-counties for a final showdown.

To ensure the smooth running of the championship, a five-member committee was announced during the launch event. The committee is chaired by Hudson Kyagaba, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Uganda Mweso Association.

The other committee members include, Moses Ssekandi, Godfrey Sseruggo, Lydia Ndagire, and Fulgencio Kayinga.
