Buganda Premier challenges coffee farmers to work towards fighting poverty

Buganda Premier Owek Charles Peter Mayiga has shown concern over the increasing poverty levels in homes which is caused by laziness and people looking at the assistance that is being offered.

The Katikkiro was touring coffee farms in Buweekula County with an aim of looking at how far coffee farmers under the Mwanyi Terimba project have gone with their farms, and to encourage them to continue with coffee farming.

While speaking to the residents in Kyetume at John Kayengere’s farm which is at over 26 hectares of land, Owek Mayiga reported to the farmers the message from the Kabaka of Buganda His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi the II to the farmers saying: ” Our power is in working hard for survival.”

Katikkiro said that as the Baganda are asking for federal system, they should actively engage in ventures that can help them to earn money and fight against poverty among themselves, he noted ventures such as agriculture, grazing and business.

He as well urged leaders to live exemporary lives so that whatever they encourage people to do is what they engage and take part in.

The Buganda Kingdom Spokesperson Owek Israel Kazibwe Kitooke reminded farmers to engage their wives and children in their farming activities so that they add their efforts towards the success of their projects as a family

Coffee farmer John Kayengere appreciated the Katikkiro for the words of wisdom on different platforms that has helped them move on with work with courage that they will succeed.

Kayengere commended different people and organisations for supporting him noting the BUCADEF for giving them coffee seeds, the central government as it also contributed coffee seeds to the farmers in Buweekula, Uganda Coffee Development Authority for the fertilizers and machine for drying coffee after harvest, minister for agriculture in Buganda kingdom, Luweekula and his Deputy, Buweekula County chief, among others.

The Mwanyi Terimba project was initiated in 2016 and farmers in different parts of the Kingdom and the country at large have embraced it through planting and harvesting coffee and finally earn good money from the coffee products, hence fighting poverty.
