Cabinet has approved the National Alcohol Control Policy that is aimed at, among others, raising community awareness about the magnitude and determinants of the health, social and economic problems associated with harmful use of alcohol.
Mr Ssubi Kiwanuka, the public affairs officer at Uganda Media Centre, told journalists on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, that the policy carries other objectives such as enhancing capacity and increasing technical support for prevention of harmful use of alcohol and management of associated alcohol disorders.
The policy also demonstrates the government’s commitment to address the alcohol-related harm using effective evidence-based intervention.
The government also intends to strengthen regulation on production, packaging, distribution, marketing, sale and consumption of all alcohol beverages.
In 2017, Parliament revived a private member’s Bill that seeks to regulate the alcohol industry. The Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill, 2016, is a brainchild of Betty Nambooze, the Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament.
The current Liquor Act, Cap. 93 Section 19 places a restriction upon the license not to allow persons under the apparent age of 18 to be in a bar or licensed premises during the period of sale and consumption of alcohol
At the same sitting, cabinet also noted the impact of Corporate Income Tax Waiver and Refinancing of the Bujagali Hydro Electricity Power Project on the end-user tariff.
A Surveyors Registration Board was approved and appointed with Judy Rugasira as the Chairperson. She will be deputised by Dr. Moses Musinguzi as the Vice-Chairperson.
The approved board was tasked to regulate and control the Profession of Surveyors and all activities of Registered Surveyors within Uganda.
