The Cabinet of the Republic of Uganda which met on Monday 26th August at Prime minister’s office along Sir Apolo Kagwa road in Kampala agreed not to construct a power dam at Murchison Falls along River Nile in Masindi district.
According to the cabinet the proposed 360-megawatt project on the Victoria Nile at Murchison Falls in Murchison Falls National Park would “affect the scenery, ecosystem and subsequently tourism”, said Tourism Minister Ephraim Kamuntu.
“Cabinet took a decision at its latest sitting that there will be no construction of the hydro power dam in Murchison Falls National Park,” Kamuntu added.
More than 100,000 tourists visit the park in Uganda’s northwest every year.
