CBS Radio celebrates 27th anniversary of service, Katikkiro Mayiga commends the Buganda Economic Bureau for the Idea

Thursday 22 June 2023 Central Broadcasting Service(CBS) Radio”Ey’Obujjajja has celebrated 27 years of service as it was officially inaugurated on this day and has been a success.

It was 22/06/1996, when the kingdom of Buganda officially opened its own radio station called CBS FM, with an aim of bringing out the voices of the kingdom in particular, for the smooth running of the work that was taking place within the kingdom, the idea which was initiated by the Buganda Business Bureau.

According to Buganda kingdom, the kingdom interests and voices were not given enough spaces in Uganda media of those days, which hindered communication within the kingdom, thereby leaving people behind as far as issues concerning their kingdom were concerned.

In some instances, the very few times when the Buganda kingdom officials were given time to talk to its people on different stations, limited content was being aired and sometimes never aired at all, depending on what was said and about what.

According to the prime minister of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, luck of enough media spaces to the kingdom triggered their need to start its own station. On 10th /01/1995, the Buganda cabinet led by the prime minister Owek. Joseph Mulwanyammuli Semwogerere who moved a motion for the kingdom to start its own radio station, which was seconded by the cabinet member Kiwanuka Nteyafa.

On 11th/ 05/1995, the kingdom established a committee which was headed by Robert Kibuuka, with his Secretary Michael Kawooya Mwebe to initiate the idea of starting the kingdom radio station.

The Kabaka of Buganda his Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, has commended all clients who advertise with CBS FM saying, its these adverts that keep the radio running through the payments that they make for their adverts to be played on CBS FM waves.

The Kabaka has argued CBS employees right from the managing committee, to try as much as they can to effectively and carefully respond to the needs of their clients, since they highly contribute to the smooth running of the station.

He directed the kingdom to use CBS FM to educate people on their culture and norms, promote Luganda language, air developmental programs, bring accurate news to the public, encourage the youths to work, and to entertain people in the kingdom.

The Buganda Kingdom prime minister Charles Peter Mayiga has commended the committee of the Buganda Economic Bureau (BEB) which is currently known as the Buganda Investment and Commercial Undertakings Limited (BICUL), for initiating the idea of starting the Buganda Kingdom Radio, CBS FM, which was officially opened on 22/06/1996.

The first voice to be heard on CBS waves was of Hon. Peter Sematimba the MD then.
