Court has on Friday 25 ordered unconditional release of the 46 Makerere University students.
This was after the students through their lawyer Eron Kiiza filing an application before Buganda Road court for orders that police unconditionally releases them from its custody at Wandegeya police station.
“This matter coming up for hearing before this honorable court on the 25th day of October, 2019 at 2:30 before His Worship Robert Mukanza in the presence of the applicants’ counsel Kiiza Eron and Okwalinga Moses and in the absence of both the applicants and the respondents,” reads in part the court order.
Adding..”It is hereby ordered; the applicants, students of Makerere University be unconditionally released from police custody/ detention, every police officer is directed to comply with this order.”
The detained 46 students were allegedly arrested on Wednesday this week during a strike in which they are opposed to a 15% tuition increment by the Makerere University administration.
However, their colleagues led by the Vice guild president Judith Naluwago contend that the 46 students are being held illegally by police beyond the mandatory 48hours within which they ought to be brought before a competent court of law
They further claim that efforts to secure police bond for their arrested colleagues have also been effortless .
In the said application, the Attorney General, OC Wandegeya police station Samuel Obwang and DPC Godwin Ochaki have been named as respondents.
On Wednesday, Makerere University students took to the streets protesting a 15% tuition increment which they claim it’s unfair to their parents and colleagues who pay their own fees. The demonstrations ate still on-going.
