Paddy Sserunjonji, aka Sobi, a self-confessed leader of Kifeesi, a criminal gang that has been terrorising residents of Kampala and surrounding areas, has been killed.

Sobi was lynched by a group of people over a contested piece of land in Maddu Sub county, Gomba District, on Monday, 18 December 2023.

It is alleged that at around 12.30pm, on the contested land claimed by one Kalisa, a resident of Kibaale LC1, Kigumba Parish in Maddu Sub County, Gomba district, a group of around 50 people armed with sticks, pangas, spears attacked Sobi and another group of people who also claimed the same land belongs to them.

This led to the killing of Sobi and several others yet to be identified.

According to a police statement from Kanoni Police Station, the land in question was bought by Kalisa from a Munyarwanda at Shs100m and paid only 20m in 2007 but it’s claimed that he bought from a wrong person.

“Another group of people who claimed to be the children and grandchildren of the now late Kibi Paul led by Deborah Nagadiya and Kiwewa Barton emerged with land titles claiming the same land belongs to them,” the police statement reads in part.

They went up to court and before the matter was resolved, the second group also brought other thugs led by Sobi from Kampala Kisenyi to stay on that land as they cleared the unwanted glass.

According to the police statement, last night, peopled allied to Kalisa hired their people from other areas and planned to attack the Kampala group.

Several belongings that included food, eating utensils, structures and others were destroyed.
The same group is alleged to have killed more others though only one body has been recovered with cut wounds on leg and neck.

Preparations under way to transfer the body of the deceased to the hospital for post-mortem, police said.
Sobi came to the spotlight in 2017 when he confessed to be the leader of Kifeesi, a criminal gang, which terrorized Kampala.

His group terrorized citizens in Kampala and on several occasions, their victims died.

He conducted ‘operations’ involving petty theft, armed robberies and sometimes murder.

His gang robbed several forex bureaus in the city.

On several occasions, whenever he was arrested and sent to jail, Sobi and his gang members would later be released on bail and begin from where they left.
