The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) is poised to enact a law regulating operational standards on tariffs in the East African Region.
This move aims to address concerns that economic progress has been hindered by tariff barriers.
The chairperson of the EALA committee on Communication, Trade and Investment, Shahbal Said Suleiman, attributes the existence of tarrif barriers to largely the member state trading policies.
He says despite these challenges, the EAC has made significant strides in promoting regional trade, successfully intervening in over 500 tariff barrier policies among member states.
Similarly President Yoweri Museveni is scheduled to open the EALA session at State House Entebbe, marking the beginning of a 21-day sitting in Uganda.
Speaking to journalists, EALA Speaker Joseph Ntakirutimana outlined the assembly’s agenda and deliberate on various bills and petitions, including the EAC Youth Bill, Investment Bank Bill, Anti-FGM Bill, and Eight Report.
