On World Press Freedom Day 2025, We extend our warm greetings and we salute the courage and dedication of journalists and actors in the media fraternity of Uganda who tirelessly seek truth and hold power accountable. However, we condemn the police and military brutality, harassment, and censorship faced by journalists in Uganda while doing their job, a case in point the ugly situation that befell journalists in Kawempe bi election at the behest of State security organizations

This year’s theme, “Reporting in the brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and The Media,” underscores the evolving media landscape. We in FDC, contend, Press freedom is not just a human right, it’s a necessary tool for right access to information. Indeed, there is no true democracy without freedom of the press.

As FDC Party we strongly denounce the use of force, intimidation, arrests, and detention to silence journalists. These actions undermine press freedom, democracy, and the public’s right to information. We stand in solidarity with journalists who face persecution, assault, and threats for doing their job.

The media is a key pillar in the checks and balances that underpin democratic rule. That’s why the descent into authoritarian rule often starts with independent media being targeted. Over the last few decades, a number of states across the globe have taken this path including our beloved country Uganda, using coercion and often violence to persecute media outlets and individual journalists. True democracy is not possible without a free media scrutinizing those in power.

In a world where misinformation spreads rapidly and press freedom is under threat, we need to stand in solidarity with journalists who risk their lives for the truth. Therefore, as FDC party we demand the following from the regim

1. Protection for journalists from police brutality, harassment, and intimidation.

2. Accountability for those responsible for attacks on journalists

3. Respect for press freedom and the right to report without fear or interference

4. An end to censorship and restrictions on journalistic freedom

5.Safe and accessible working environments for journalists.

6. Independence of the media regulatory authorities.

7. Transparency of media ownership

8. Transparency and fairness in the allocation of state advertising

9. Advocate for legislation that seeks to put in place safeguards to combat political interference in editorial decisions for both private and public service media providers, protect journalists and their sources, and guarantee media freedom.

Finally, this occasion highlights the crucial role of a free and independent press in democracy. We hope it reinforces our commitment to press freedom, recognizing its significance in fostering transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse.

The FDC party believes an independent and free press is essential for a functioning democracy. so, we commit to promoting and protecting press freedom, ensuring journalists can work safely and independently.

Happy World Press Freedom Day the Fourth Estate.
