The former Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) President( Chairman then) George William Katumba Wamala passes on this morning
Katumba complained of chest pains after returning home on Friday before he was rushed to Mulago hospital where he was pronounced dead in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Katumba George, 75, a legendary referee both in Uganda and on the international scene also governed FUFA briefly in 1975.
He was shockingly appointed FUFA chairman in 1975 by former Central Region Governor Lt. Col. Nasur Abdullah.
At the time of his appointment as FUFA President then chairman, Katumba was serving as a member of the National Football League Committee representing referees.
His reign at the top position of the football association lasted for only two weeks before elections were held for a permanent replacement.
Katumba became a national referee in 1969, earning his FIFA badge in 1978.
In 1984, Katumba officiated at the Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast were he was voted as the tournament’s best assistant referee.
He was a commissioner and assessor after retiring from active refereeing at the time of his death and has also been serving on the FUFA Regional Referees’ Monitoring Committee, with his tenure running until 2021.
