Former Orlando Pirates, Nkwazi FC, Cape Town City striker Justin Shonga passes away in Zambia

Former Orlando Pirates star Justin Shonga has passed away after a short illness at the age of 27 on Sunday, 30 June 2024 in Lusaka.

The Chipata-born player had been turning out for Najran in Saudi Arabia having joined the Second Division club in February this year.

The Zambian Football Association confirmed Shonga’s unfortunate death.

“Former Chipolopolo forward Justin Shonga has died,” a statement read. 

 “Zambia Police Deputy Spokesperson Dan Mwale has confirmed in an interview with the FAZ Media Team. 

“Mwale said Shonga died at Sikanze Police Hospital after a short illness. More details will be availed in due course.”

Shonga rose to prominence after he caught the eye at the 2017 Cosafa Cup in the North West Province – scoring three goals to help Zambia reach the final where they lost to Zimbabwe.

His exploits caught the eye of Pirates who signed him in 2017 from Nkwazi in Zambia where he was also working as a police officer.

The frontman scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in 56 PSL matches during his three-year stint with the Buccaneers – helping the team finish second in the league twice.

Shonga went on to play for Cape Town City, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila and Sekhukhune United in the PSL. He also had stints in Egypt, Georgia and Saudi Arabia.

He represented Zambia national team Chipolopolo 33 times.

CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe conveys heartfelt condolences to the family of Justin Shonga, Football Association of Zambia (“FAZ”), as well as the entire Zambian Football Family.

Details of the former Gagra player’s funeral burial will be announced soon.
