In a bid to promote planned, decent, and safe building structures in Uganda, the government through  the National Building Review Board (NBRB) has announced the launch of the second edition of the National Building Control Awards (NBCA) for the year 2024.

The awards, organised under the theme “Building for Sustainability,” aim to recognise and reward stakeholders who have shown outstanding compliance with regulatory frameworks.

Established under the Building Control Act, 2013, NBRB is charged with overseeing building developments, ensuring accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and maintaining harmony with the environment. Through the Building Industry Management System (BIMS), an innovative online platform, the NBRB aims to streamline and digitize all building control processes.

Eng. Anthony Rucukye, who represented the NBRB Executive Secretary, told the media that this year’s NBCA will highlight advancements in technology and environmental harmony within the built environment. The awards will acknowledge individuals and organizations that have embraced sustainability parameters such as energy efficiency, natural ventilation, and water efficiency in their projects.

Eng. Rucukye said to ensure transparency, the awards will follow a participatory approach, allowing stakeholders to nominate potential winners across seven categories. These categories range from recognizing complex structural forms in Class A Buildings to honouring Building Committees and Contractors for their excellence in building practices.

The nomination process, open to the public from today, Wednesday 17th July to 17th September 2024, will be followed by rigorous scrutiny and verification by a panel of independent experts drawn from various reputable institutions and organizations in Uganda. which include Professional Engineers (UIPE), Uganda Society of Architects (USA), Institution of Surveyors of Uganda (ISU), Uganda Police Force – Directorate of Fire and Rescue Services, Academia, Institute of Internal Auditors Uganda, Uganda National Association of Builders, Suppliers & Engineering Contractor (UNABSEC), Uganda Manufacturers Association (AMA), and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and Partners. The final award ceremony, scheduled for Friday, 6th December 2024, will crown the  winners in each category.

The NBCA 2024 not only aims to commend exemplary adherence to building regulations but also to encourage stakeholders to contribute to a well-planned and sustainable built environment. Through collaborative efforts and initiatives like these awards, Uganda endeavours to create a safe and thriving architectural landscape for all.

The Vice Chairperson of the Board. Eng. Betty Nakamya, was delighted to officially launch the second NBCA Awards 2024. “ I am humbled to be the first person to make this vote, I therefore urge all Ugandans to vote”
