The official vehicle that belonging to the office of the Auditor general Karamoja region has on Friday 1st October caught fire while loaded with bags of charcoal.

The car registration number UG 0275H that was heading from Moroto to Soroti had loaded bags of charcoal without noticing that there was fire.

The incident that took place at Nadunget trading center in Moroto district at around 3:30 pm excited the general public who have been blaming government officials of promoting sale of charcoal.

Simon Ngorok, one of the environmental activists of Nadunget said several government cars always go back from Moroto loaded with charcoal frustrating the effort of government and other development partners who are in the fight against environmental degradation in Karamoja.

“I wish that car had burnt all because first of all the car is government vehicle which is not supposed to be used for transporting charcoal,” he said.

Mr. Richard Okiror, an official responsible for the running of the office of Auditor General in Moroto confirmed the incident describing it as unfortunate.

“Yes the car caught fire with charcoal but it was with the driver alone however, it didn’t burn the entire car,” he said.
