ndependent Abubaker Kawalya has won the election of Speaker of Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA .
The positions of speaker and deputy speakers of the Authority and divisions were created following Amendment of the KCCA Act.
The speakers will now preside over council meetings that were previously chaired by Mayors.
Four had showed interest in the position of speaker at KCCA.
These were Makerere University Councilor, Doreen Nyanjura, Abubakar Kawalya of Lubaga Division, Muhammad Segirinya, from Kawempe Division and Kyambogo University Councilor, Buruhan Byaruhanga who later resorted for the deputy position.
Nyanjura and Byaruhanga was contesting on the Forum for Democratic Charge-FDC and National Resistance Movement party tickets respectively. Kawalya, who also belongs to FDC, and Ssegirinya, were running as independents.
Lubaga North Councilor Kawalya was declared elected by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate and will be deputised by Kyambago University Councilor Buruhan Byaruhanga after emerging a winner with 18 votes while his contender Doreen Sabuka garnered 13 vote and One of the votes cast was invalid.
Meanwhile the other election, Musa Mbazira is speaker Lubaga Division council.
He polled 27 votes beating his rival, Henry Lutwama who managed 19 votes.
In Kawempe Division Onesmas Mutumba emerged winner with 31 votes followed by Stephen Mungi in second position with 16 votes.
The positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker at KCCA and respective city divisions were introduced by the KCCA amendment Act 2019.
