The Inspectorate of Government has started investigations into allegations of sexual harassment by lecturers at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara City.
The investigations follow a complaint that was raised during the students’ Anti-Corruption Conference organized by the office of the IGG and Integrity Ambassadors Clubs held at the University Chapel Grounds on Thursday.
Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe the Deputy Inspector General of Government, who was accompanied by the University Chancellor Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa said that they received reports through the complaints desk about lecturers sexually exploiting female students in exchangefor marks.
According to Muhairwe, she has directed her team to ensure that the students report directly to her and investigations commence.
She said that serious action will be taken against those who will be found responsible and that they will also make tough recommendations to the National Council for Higher Education-NCHE once investigations are completed.
Rev Judith Arinaitwe Ahumuza, the Patron Integrity Clubs said that they receive several complaints from students but they are challenged by lack of evidence.
She said that they have set up a disciplinary committee that handles cases of alleged sexual harassment.
Godius Turiomuriwe, the Club President of Integrity Ambassadors Club said they have several times encouraged female students to report cases of harassment to the club.
According to Arinaitwe, they have only managed to investigate two cases while many are pending due to lack of evidence.
