The interreligious council of Uganda (IRCU) has appealed to independent electoral commission to conduct free and fair election to maintain peace in the country.
This comes with just hours to general election which is scheduled to take place tomorrow on 14th/01/202, whereby 11 candidates are eying to take presidential seat which include the incumbent ruling NRM’s party Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni, NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine, ANT’s Rtd Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu, Renewed Uganda’s Gen Henry Tumukunde, DP’s Nobert Mao, FDC’s Patrivk Oboi Amuriat, John Katumba, Nancy Kalembe, Willy Mayambala among others.
Speaking to media on 13th/01/2021, at IRCU headquarters Mmengo Kampala, His eminence Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje chairperson of the council also Mufti of Uganda said that, 2020 has been a challenging year compared to previous years due to covid 19 pandemic whereby many people suffered by poverty, lost their lives, properties, being tortured by security operatives due to various reasons in relation to political issues.
“Electoral commission should organize and prepare an enabling environment to ensure that elections conducted fairly and freely to avoid the negative consequences, he added.
Dr Apostle Joseph Sserwadda resigning officer born again Uganda expressed grievances over the increasing kidnappings in the country whereby people are kidnapped by unknown people and unfortunately taken to again unknown places thus put the lives of Ugandan citizens at stake.
Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu Mboowa Arch-bishop of the church of Uganda showed his worry of the temporary shutdown of social media (Internet) saying internet is very crucial and instrumental especially in this election period.
” I feel grief due to shutdown of internet (Facebook) especially in this election period because nothing it costs elections and people know how to use it,” he said.
The council also urged the government to organize a dialogue with politicians and other stakeholders to discuss over various issues regarding to national economy, peace, stability, democracy among others, however the council also appealed to security agencies to enable the voters exercise their rights and refrain from acts that may interfere with the delivery of a free and fair electoral outcome.
