Newly-appointed KCCA FC interim manager Jackson Mayanja believes the club can still win this season’s StarTimes Uganda Premier League despite recent dip in form and management crisis.

Speaking at his first media conference at the club on Saturday, April 22, Mayanja stated:

“KCCA, SC Villa fixture is a big game. Big games are for players with big mentality. We need to show that we have the mentality for such games. I have come here to win and this is the most important thing. We have 8 games to end the season and every game will matter. We must change our mindset and this starts immediately. I respect SC Villa and they have worked hard to get where they are but this is a derby and we are KCCA FC. We have to step up and show we want it more than them.”Mayanja said.

I accepted to come in as an interim coach because KCCA is my family and the only club I played for here in Uganda.”He added.

After leading the 15-team league table with an eight-point margin for several weeks, KCCA FC lost the top spot on April 1 when SC Villa toppled them following a five-match winless streak.

With eight games to the end of the season, KCCA are currently in second position with 38 points compared to Villa’s 43 points.

However, KCCA have two games in hand which give them chances of becoming the the champions if they don’t loss any point in their remaining games and pray for the rivals, SC Vipers and SC Villa lose some of the games.

Interestingly, Mayanja’s first game will be against Villa on Sunday, April 23 at the Phillip Omondi stadium, Lugogo.

Mayanja was appointed three days after former coach Morley Byekwaso resigned, citing player power as the main reason failing the club’s ambition.

However, Mayanja downplayed the threat of the so called player-power to his two month tenure. He said:

“My personality and presence of manager in the dressing room is important, so these players know who Jackson Mayanja is.”

Byekwaso quit on April 16 following a 1-0 defeat to Bright Stars in Uganda Cup quarterfinals and KCCA went on lose 0-2 to URA FC in the league under former assistant coach Badru Kaddu.

KCCA FC are second on the table and a win against Villa gets them to within two points from the table leaders but with two games in hand.

Hosts KCCA FC lost their previous league game 2-0 to URA FC. The Cityzens have not won in their last five matches played in all competitions.

SC Villa lost 1-0 to Arua Hill SC in their last league game played at Wankulukuku.

SC Villa are top of the table on 43 points from 22 games.

The last time both sides met in the league, KCCA FC won 3-0 at Aki Bua Stadium, Lira.

KCCA FC will have interim Manager Jackson Mayanja in charge of affairs for the very first time since his appointment.
