UPC party president Jimmy Akena says court’s decision to cancel out his leadership as UPC party president is/was wrong.
On Monday, 7th September 2020, the court of appeal finally came to its conclusion after a period of over 5 years in various courts whereby it upheld the order of high court of 2015 that, “the members of Uganda peoples congress conducted nominations and elected a president in conformity with the provisions of the constitutions of the Uganda peoples congress.
“Jimmy Akena who was addressing the media earlier today morning at party headquarters Uganda house Kampala, said that, on the 1st August 2020, they conducted a delegates conference, which process began on 26th June 2020 with the issuance of a road map following the revised road map issued by the independent electoral commission, and its the delegates conference elected him as its president fora term beginning 1st August 2020 and not exceeding 31st July 2025.
“There is essence of this ruling of 7the September 2020 upheld the order of justice Nyanzi of 2015 for the term of office which began in 1st July 2015 and ended by 31st June 2020, he said”.
He adds that, but because of the Covid lockdown, they went one month beyond that period and they were able to conclude on the 1st of August 2020, and the ruling therefore has been overtaken by events and does not affect my new term as party president.
He says, the court of appeal judgment has been therefore overtaken by events, the new leadership has already completed the processes of establishing its self within the law and as such they will continue with mandate of Uganda peoples congress members who expressed in due processes right from the district conference of 16th-26 July and concluded by delegates conference on 1st August 2020.
