Two jailed police officers  implicated  in  the murder of former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Kagezi have informed the Nakawa court that their right to a fair and speedy trial has been infringed upon after spending three months  in detention without trial.

They point out that the state is still carrying out investigations and seeking adjournments at every instance they appear before court.

The pair Including the former SIU commandant SSP Nicholas Agasirwe Karuhanga and SPC Abdulnoor Ssemujju aka Minana are now wondering what more investigations the state would be carrying out when their arrest took more than ten years following the Joan Kagezi killing.

The accused are also calling for their unconditional release from Luzira prison stating that they can be re-arrested once the state has wound up its investigations .

They claim their continued detention for 105 days amounts to mere persecution.

Chief state Attorney Richard Birivumbuka has informed court that police inquiries are in advanced stages and any time the suspects will be committed to the International Crimes Division court to face trial.

Agasirwe and Minana’s troubles started when  the a suspect John Kisekka confessed before the International Crimes Division court that he was paid by Agasirwe to kill Kagezi for meddling into cases involving Muslims.

At the time of her murder by shooting in March 2015 at Kiwatule, Kagezi was the lead prosecutor in  the 2010 Kampala bombing case where majority of the suspects were Muslims.

Grade one magistrate Dapthine Ayebare has told Agasirwe and Minana that they can only  raise their concerns before the High Court which is seized with jurisdiction to try their murder offense. They have been sent back on remand until 24th/ September as police inquiries continue.
