The Katikkiro of Buganda Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga has expressed concern over plans to tax Buganda Kingdom Luwalo campaign which is one of the sources of income that the kingdom uses to run different kingdom activities and rendering services to the people in the kingdom.

Speaking to the congregation at the last Luwalo function in 2023 at Bulange Mengo, the Katikkiro revealed that he has received reports from some quarters about the plans being hatched to start revving taxes from Oluwalo. He pointed out that people of Buganda were denied the federal system of government therefore the Kingdom initiated this campaign so that the Kabaka can get money to render services to His people which someone wants to disorganise and this is extremely unjustified, since this money is willingly contributed by the kingdom people. He noted that the kingdom companies pay taxes and that is enough.

However, Owek Mayiga commended officials and chiefs of the the kingdom at different levels of leadership who have moblised people in different parts of the kingdom and enabled them contribute towards the kingdom development throughout the year.

He urged Kingdom chiefs, Ggombolola chiefs in particular to work closely with the chiefs under their jurisdiction as the essence of leadership is finding solutions to challenges but not to regard their challenges as hinderance to progress and to site challenges all the time so that they can execute their mandate in their areas of jurisdiction. He called upon leaders to learn to multitask since they have different tasks to fulfill and urged different members of the executive committees to be involved in the different tasks such that in the end they are able to accomplish different tasks.

He appreciated the fact that 2023 has been very rewarding as far as Luwalo contribution is concerned because the kingdom has witnessed a total amount of 1.5 billion shillings from the campaign which is a great contribution from the people of the Kingdom to sustain the activities of the Kabaka’s government and sustain the heritage that was received by the people of Buganda that was equipped to them by their fore fathers.

He highlighted that the money from Luwalo has supported education and Kabaka education fund in the Kingdom, health programs, operations of Kabaka’s government and administration throughout the Kingdom among others.

The Minister of Local government in Buganda government Owek Joseph Kawuki reported the different personalities, institutions, districts, organisations among others that have contributed towards luwalo in 2023. He mentioned the best contributors such as Katabi and Kajjansi mayor 2 million shillings, Kiboga Singo 3million shillings , Buvuma 1.7 million shillings, Kasanda Singo and Luwero Bulemeezi 1 million shillings, Janan schools followed by Mumsa high school Mityana, then Homesdallen schools Kyadondo, Cbs Pewosa 15 million shillings, function managers 6 million shillings, coffee farmers 15 million shillings, women groups from Busiro, kyadondo and Bulemeezi respectively.
