River Katonga flooding has paralyzed transport along Kampala-Masaka road
The Uganda Police and the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) have advised motorists and pedestrians using Kampala-Masaka highway to use alternative routes following the abrupt flooding of River Katonga which crosses the highway.
According to the statement released by Uganda Police on Thursday morning May, 11th 2023, individuals travelling from Masaka are advised to take the Masaka-Ssembabule Road as a diversion.
“The water levels at Katonga River have risen significantly, posing a serious risk to motorists and pedestrians attempting to cross. For your safety, we strongly advise using alternative routes while we collaborate with UNRA
to address the situation promptly. Travellers from Kampala are encouraged to utilize the Mpigi-Butambala-Ssembabule road as a viable alternative.” the Police Statement reads
“Due to severe flooding at Katonga threatening traffic flow & following advice from Police, we urge motorists from Kampala to Masaka to DIVERT & use Mpigi—Kanoni—Maddu—Ssembabule—Masaka, & vice versa for those from Masaka—Kampala as we allow water levels to subside.” the UNRA statement also reads.
Motorists from Kampala travelling to Masaka will for the meantime drive 137Km on Mpigi—Kanoni—Ssembabule, then 47Km on Ssembabule—Masaka road to access Masaka town.
Following the heavy rains in the country, a number of rivers have for the last days crossed several highways and paralyzed transport routes leading to various destinations forcing UNRA and Police to divert motorists to alternative routes.
