KATWE DOMINATED THE 16 EDITION OF SOM INTER-PROJECT CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP AS KATO WINS HIS IN 13 YEARS

The four days of the 16 edition of the Som inter-project chess championship came to an end with Katwe project dominate this year’s event. Maria Nansubuga, Richard Kato and Patricia Kawuma, all from Katwe won in different categories. The  event was played at sports outreach resource centre, Kiwawu, Mityana road with participants from Kampala projects of Katwe, Makindye, Kibuli, Bwaise and Kawempe, Kagadi, Gulu, Masaka ,Kiboga, Hoima and Kenya,while this time Rwanda failed to participate due to financial problem.

Maria Nansubuga, who was the best female player in unrated category won herself five hundred thousand shilling and a scholarship from mr Georgi Ivanovich.

“I thank God for this gift of scholarship because i missed last term due to school fees but with, i will be able to continue with my studies”, Maria,a P6 student at Nakivubo Blue p/s states.

While it was a joy to Richard Kato, who won his first title in 13 years since he started playing chess in 2008.

“I expected to perform well this year because have been working hard”, Kato sates.

According to Robert Katende, the founder of Som chess academy, the competition have been organized well and hope more organization next year.
