KCCA FC returned to winning ways after obliterating SC Villa 4-1 in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League match played Sunday, April 23 at the Phillip Omondi stadium, Lugogo.
Congolese import Tshisungu Kankonde, Rogers Mato, Saidi Mayanja and Julius Poloto scored KCCA’s goals to make a perfect start and response for Jackson Mayanja, who was appointed interim coach, four days ago.
The victory, the first in their recent five games, means KCCA cut the gap on table leaders SC Villa to just two points.
Despite Sunday’s humiliating loss to the city rivals, Villa still leads the 15-team log with 43 points from 23 games. KCCA are second with 41 points from 21 games.
In his post-match comments, Mayanja insisted KCCA can still win league. “I set my goal that I need a trophy; so, if I need a trophy there’s no joking here and that’s you saw every player was okay,” he stated.
Mayanja, a former skipper and legend at the club, replaced Morley Byekwaso who resigned from the coaching job on April 16 following a poor run of results.
With seven games left, Mayanja firmly believes he will deliver the league trophy to Lugogo like he did as a player and club captain in 1997.
Meanwhile, SC Villa’s ambition to end the 19-year league title spell has come under tilt after the Jogoos back-to-back losses to Arua Hill on April 19 and KCCA on Sunday.
However, Coach Jackson Magera must reorganize his troops before taking on defending champions Vipers SC in their next match on Saturday, April 29.
