Uganda Premier League side KCCA FC will face Libyan side Abu Salim SC in the CAF Confederation Cup second round of qualifiers.

The Libyan side eliminated Tunisian team Olympique Beja at the first round on a 1-0 aggregate victory.

Abu Salim won the first leg on the road 1-0, before a goalless draw which they hosted in Cairo.

Abu Salim made their Libyan Premier League debut in 2018/19 season. Last season, they finished fourth.

KCCA will play the first leg of the second preliminary round game away from home on September 15-17.

They will host the second leg at home between 29th September to 1st October 2023.

Abu Salim are hosting their Continental games outside Libya – Cairo (in Egypt) to be specific.

KCCA are likely to host their games at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, home of their local rivals Vipers.

The winner on aggregate over two legs will qualify for the group stage games for the CAF Confederation Cup 2023/24.

The Lugogo-based side received a bye (exempted) at the first round of the Qualifiers, and hence are starting the competition at the Second round where the winner qualifies to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.

KCCA were among the 12 highest ranked teams in this year’s competition and hence were exempted from playing the first hurdle of qualifiers.

CAF made the rankings based on results of 2018 and 2017 to determine the exempted teams.

The last time KCCA FC played on the continent was against Rwanda’s AS Kigali in the 2nd preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup in January 2021.

How did KCCA reach here?

KCCA FC are represent Uganda at the CAF Confederation Cup this season.

Per FUFA rules on Ugandan representatives on the Continent, the position normally goes to the Uganda Cup winner.

But in the incident when the team wins a double, both League and Cup, the CAF Confederation Cup slot goes to the second team in the League.

Vipers beat Police 1-0 to win the Uganda Cup and also seal a double having won the League as well.

Vipers initially booked a place in CAF Champions League after winning the UPL title.

And KCCA got the ticket to the Secondary CAF Club Competition after finishing second in the League.
