The Uganda Law Society has been urged to extend legal aid to the elderly whose land is increasingly being grabbed by selfish individuals.
Capt. Francis Babu the Central region elderly parliamentary aspirant says due to limited knowledge on legal issues, many older persons in the country have been duped by their relatives and neighbors and made to sign on papers giving away their land unknowingly.
While meeting votes of the electoral college of the elderly in Kampala on Monday 21st, Babu implored the Uganda law society to find away of helping the vulnerable older persons out of this situation.
Babu also highlighted the need to sensitize the elderly to write wills early enough to avoid sparking conflicts in their families when they die.
” We need to carry out senstization so that old people can know how to keep their land safe” he said.
72 year old Babu said issues to do with the older persons’ welfare, access to medicare, social security and inclusiveness of the elderly are top on his agenda once he is elected.
Babu quit his candidature for the 1st Vice chairperson in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee race for former Moses Kigongo following a meeting with President Museveni.
The former minister and commercial pilot who is seeking to carry the NRM flag says he is the best candidate for this seat considering his past leadership experience.
Speaking at the same meeting held at Kati Kati Restaurant in Kampala , Rose Giibwa Bwire the aspirant for the National Elderly Female MP pledged to fight for the rights of the older persons which she said are currently being stepped on by the youth.
Recently, government created five seats for elderly members of Parliament and rolled out their election plan.
This was passed by Parliament in July this year through the Parliament Election Amendment Bill 2020.
The five representatives will be elected by their electoral colleges, with a representative from each of the regions (East, West, North and Central) and a national female MP.
