Lt. Col. Emmy Katabazi, the Deputy Director General (DDG) of the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), while addressing the youth on day 2 of the Greater Masaka Youth Leaders Camp, emphasised their responsibility to love their country, avoid divisive politics, and embrace unity.
During his speech, he praised the Masaka youth for their discipline. However, he pointed out a crucial problem the country faces—the failure to add value to its products. He urged the youth and Ugandans to arise and realise the resources available to develop Uganda
“Uganda has potential, for example, with Karamoja’s abundant resources. Despite being rich in industrial and commercial values such as gold, platinum, iron ore, and copper, among others, Karamoja is often labelled as the poorest region,” he said.
He stated that a 2011 survey found that the region is sitting on reserves of 50 minerals with a total of 17,083 square kilometres of land licenced for mineral exploration and extraction activities.
“However, these have been left to international organisations like the Chinese to mine the minerals,” he added.
Lt. Col. Katabazi cautioned against being swayed by divisive politics and stressed the need for a unifying ideology. He urged the youth not to allow politics to divide them and emphasised the importance of national identity over party affiliations. He reminded them that collaboration makes everything possible.
While Professor Ismail Ssemwogerere, a businessman in Masaka, expressed his gratitude to the youth for their dedication to serving the country. He lectured the youth about financial management, emphasising the principles of diligent work, strategic investments, and prudent savings.
Prof. Ssemwogerere cautioned against reckless spending, substance abuse, and squandering resources through multiple relationships. He urged the youth to strive for a better life, highlighting that their achievements are a direct reflection of their efforts.
The camp, spanning three days, commenced on the 6th and concludes on the 8th of December 2023 at St. Charles Lwanga S.S., Kasasa in Kalungu district.
