Lugazi FC made a stunning start to their BetPawa FUFA Big League season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Ndejje University at the Lugazi Stadium on Wednesday.

The match was preceded by an electrifying atmosphere generated by devoted club fans, who, despite the ongoing stadium redevelopment, made their presence felt in their designated section.

The game ignited from the very outset, with sparks flying both on and off the pitch. New signing Samuel Semugugu, making his debut, aimed to make an immediate impact.

Although his initial goal was disallowed for offside just 112 seconds into the match, he would soon have his moment.

In the sixth minute Semugugu etched his name into Lugazi’s history books. He capitalized on a precise long pass from Savio Kabugo, leaving the Ndejje defenders trailing.

With a combination of skill and composure, Semugugu outwitted both the defender and the goalkeeper, calmly slotting the ball into an unguarded net.

Lugazi FC continued to apply pressure, with Moses Buga coming close to extending the lead, only to narrowly miss the target after an impressive display down the right wing.

Ronald Ssempala shared Semugugu’s frustration as his apparent goal was disallowed by the assistant referee.

Coach William Kyeswa’s made a double substitution, introducing Derrick Mwanje and Mitala Mubarak to replace Umar Kayemba and Solomon Akodi, respectively.

This change injected fresh energy into Lugazi, with Mwanje nearly setting up Ssempala for another goal, only to see his effort miss the target.

Semugugu continued to shine, securing his brace with a simple tap-in from close range after Buga’s initial shot was parried into his path.

In the 66th minute, Ssemugugu was substituted for Shafik Kiryowa, and Samuel Nsubuga took Ssempala’s place.

As the game neared its conclusion, Mwanje finally found the back of the net, converting a low cross from Mitala to cap off a dream start for Lugazi.

Lugazi FC now shifts their focus to their away fixture against Calvary FC in Yumbe on October 8, 2023.
