Manchester United suffer home defeat to Crystal Palace

Joachim Andersen scored the only goal of the match as Crystal Palace recorded a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils beat Palace 3-0 in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, but the Eagles gained revenge in the league, with Roy Hodgson’s side securing all three points courtesy of Andersen’s first-half effort.

Man United have now lost four of their opening seven matches of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign, with a total of nine points from seven matches leaving them down in 10th spot in the table.

Palace had a huge chance to take the lead in the 11th minute when Marc Guehi found himself free inside the Man United box, but the centre-back angled his header just wide of the post.

Rasmus Hojlund then had one cleared off the line down the other end by Tyrick Mitchell during an open period of the match at Old Trafford.

Palace made the breakthrough in the 26th minute of the match when Andersen’s brilliant effort from a half-cleared free kick was deflected into the back of the Man United net off Diogo Dalot.

Casemiro almost answered back immediately with an effort from distance, but the ball just missed the post, and the visitors entered the half-time break with the lead against a Man United side that were struggling in the final third of the field.

The Red Devils were firmly on the front foot at the start of the second period, with Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone making smart saves to keep out Bruno Fernandes and then Hojlund in quick succession.

Man United had a shout for a penalty when the ball struck Joel Ward’s hand, but the referee was not interested and VAR agreed, with Palace still in the lead heading into the final 30 minutes of action.

Red Devils goalkeeper Andre Onana made a smart save to keep out a strike from Will Hughes in the period that followed, with the visitors still carrying a threat despite seeing little of the ball.

Mason Mount headed a brilliant Dalot cross wide of the post in the 70th minute, before Mitchell bundled just wide of the Palace goal following a dangerous cross from Fernandes, with the visitors surviving two dangerous moments in quick succession.

Andersen cleared one off the line in the latter stages, and Palace held on to secure all three points at Old Trafford, and Man United are now back in crisis mode ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League contest with Turkish giants Galatasaray at Old Trafford.
