Minister for Kampala Betty Amongi has ordered the closure of all places for entertainment and leisure such as bars, concerts, cinemas and all street markets in a bid to enforce the directive issued by President Museveni over coronavirus.
The minister warned that failure to implement the directives will lead to revocation of licences.
“KCCA enforcement officers have been tasked to enforce the closure of all bars, discos, clubs, sports, music shows, cinemas and concerts. This includes bars and concerts and cinemas in Hotels. So, if you thought that Hotels were not included, you are going to go to bars in Sheraton, Serena, Imperial. No, all bars and clubs are to close, whether in a Hotel or somewhere else,” she said.
“And anyone who fails to abide will face the legal consequences including withdrawing their trading licenses. So if you defy the directive and we find your bar open, we shall withdraw your license,” the minister added.
The minister added that only gazetted markets by KCCA shall be allowed to operate in the city.
“All street markets, weekly markets, roadside markets among others are prohibited from operating effective today 19th March 2020.”
Ms Amongi directed all schools in Kampala to be closed tomorrow by midday.
“We have already issued circulars to all the schools in Kampala not to receive day students to school. Tomorrow, all day scholars are not allowed to be sent to school because we want to avoid traffic congestion and give space for those who are picking students from the boarding section to be able to do so in a more organised way. All schools must be closed by midday tomorrow (Friday),” she directed.
