Two opposition legislators have expressed regret over boycotting plenary sittings noting their absence saw parliament pass the Petroleum Supply Amendment Bill which gave monopoly to Uganda National Oil Company to import fuel products in Uganda.

Members including the Baale County MP- Charles Tebandeke and the Hoima City MP who doubles as the shadow minister for Energy and Minerals Asinansi Nyakato noted the monopolization of fuel in the country is not a solution to reduce fuel prices but rather lead to higher costs.

Parliament passed the Petroleum Supply (Amendment), Bill 2023, giving the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) exclusivity to import and supply all petroleum products destined for Ugandan Market and it is aimed at eliminating the middlemen in the oil supply chain that are said to be the cause of fluctuations in oil pump prices.

Tebandeke noted that they are to challenge the Bill before courts of law and pray that president Museveni doesn’t accent to it.

Nyakato says that the bill wasn’t given enough time to get opinion from all the relevant stakeholders.

It’s now over a month after the opposition MPs in parliament especially those belongs to NUP led by LoP Mpuuga boycotted plenary sitting demanding government response to their missing supporters issue and human rights abuse by security agencies.
