National Open boxing championship returns after 4 years

National Open boxing, which was last played in 2019, is back after 4 years in style. 400 participants who will take part in this National Open, have  weighed in today at lugogo.The competition will start on Friday, at mtn arena .

This competition will act as a qualification for the national team, the bombers, because each two finalists in each weight category will join Champions league, where national team players are picked from.

Lukanga Boxing Club won the 2019 national boxing open championship that climaxed at the Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala and were awarded by a motorcycle.

East East boxing club were the overall runners up and took home a cow, while Police were third and won a training punching bag, a he goat and a pair of gloves.

Lukanga won the junior boys event, University of Pain took the girls’ event.

East Coast’s Paul Rasikala and Teddy Nakimuli were the best young boy and girl boxers.

East Coast won the elite men with Derrick Mubiru of Copab the best boxer.

Zebra Boxing club was the best elite women club with Maureen Ajambo (Zebra) the best female boxer.

Each of the exceling clubs per category got Shs 2M (from the national council of sports) and a pair of gloves.

During the 2019 edition first son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba pledged to support the boxing industry with material support to clubs and the federation.

He offered 80 punching pads, 80 pairs of gloves, 40 punching bags, and promised to lobby a boxing ring.
