The Ministry of Health has said that Mulago National Referral Hospital will be opened in March, six years after it was closed for renovation.

In 2014, President Museveni officially launched the renovation of the hospital. The rehabilitation of the hospital was to cost US$29 million, while equipment was to cost US$20 million.

Addressing journalists in Kampala on Monday, January 27, 2020, Dr Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary at the ministry, said the hospital could not be opened in December 2019 as scheduled because some equipment had not been installed while some had not been tested.

She added that now the equipment has been installed, they are training staff and engineers who will be able to maintain the equipment.

Mr David Nuwamanya, the Mulago hospital principal administrator, said contractors are all finishing up the work.

“There were different suppliers but over all we are finishing up,” Mr Nuwamanya said.

Dr Atwine said: “We continue to mobilise for resources to establish fully functional regional workshops but also to have equipment maintenance budget which at the moment has not been possible but we hope that as we continue to advocate this will be possible.”

The money to rehabilitate Mulago is part of a loan facility from the African Development Bank meant to increase access to quality and affordable health care services in Kampala.
