The Bika By’Abaganda football and netball tournament commenced on Saturday at Wankulukuku and the opener between Ngabi Nsamba and Nkima was graced by His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
The 2023 tournament opener, both clans shared happiness depending on two disciplines, Ngabi Nsamba won the football game while Nkima looked superior in netball.
In football, the four time Bika football winners, Ngabi Nsamba looked very good in football match that they won 3-1 against 10-man Nkima with Vianne Ssekajjugo scoring a brace and Kamoga Ivan appearing on score sheet before Kabaka.
Ssekajugo gave a lead to Ngabi Nsamba in the 20th minute before doubling the lead, 16 minutes later in the first stanza.
Nkima’s consolation came in late in the game through Moses Kiggundu penalty in the 81st minute, however Kamoga Ivan buried all the Nkima’s hopes of leveling the game with the 87th minute cool press at the top of the left corner of the net and sent the fans into jubilations.
In the 73rd minute, Nkima midfielder Yasser Mugerwa was sent off for an early shower after being given a straight red card for an elbow foul on Paulista Muwonge.
Despite the red card, Ngabi Nsamba from the start of the game, they looked more beautiful and aggressive compared to 2018 champions.
Ngabi Nsamba kick started the quest for the fourth football trophy after earlier triumphs as far back as 1951, 1987 and lately 2007.
“The victory registered will motivate us as we seek to take the shield of this year. The defence and midfield need to be put right ahead of the next rounds” says David Yiga of Ngabi Nsamba.
His counterpart, Vicent Kafeero accepted that they didn’t play well on the day and the red card for Yasser Mugerwa also costed them a lot and it will affect them even in the coming fixtures.
“We did not do well in the game but we shall bounce back in the next stage of qualification, the red card also affected us because we remained less on the pitch and it will affect us again in the coming games because we are not going to be with him.” Says Vicent Kafeero, Nkima tactician.
Meanwhile, Nkima won the netball duel with a commanding 43-30 result over Ngabi Nsamba.
The Bika organizing committee will communicate the rest of the upcoming fixtures and draws but the preliminary round games will start on 24th May and in football, Ngabi Nsamba propelled straight to group stages while Nkima has to go through qualifications.
